As a leader, mentoring talent within your team and organization is a significant responsibility. One powerful framework that can greatly enhance your mentoring relationships is Transactional Analysis (TA). By applying the principles of TA, mentors can create a supportive and empowering environment for their mentees. Transactional Analysis, developed by psychiatrist Eric Berne, is a psychological theory that examines social interactions and communication patterns. It focuses on three ego states: Parent, Adult, and Child. These ego states play a crucial role in our interactions with others, including mentoring relationships. An ego state is a way in which we think, feel and behave, making up our personality at a given time. The Parent ego state represents our learned behaviors and attitudes that we have learnt from authority figures in our lives. The Adult ego state represents our rational and objective thinking in the here and the now and the Child ego state represents our spontaneous and emotional reactions.
