Public speaking strategies to prepare adult learners for the world of work. In a world more globalised than ever – there’s increased uncertainty and competition – the way we deliver knowledge, education and learning needs to be revamped. Raquel Ribeiro covers some strategic ways to improve your learners confidence and ability in public speaking. Standing in public and delivering a speech is one of people’s greatest fears. For most language students in particular, this is the ultimate challenge, though a highly demanded skill in the workplace. Most of us feel anxious when we’re speaking at a meeting or presenting at a conference. From gesture and posture, to visual resources and training, help your students in this journey to face this double challenge – speaking in public in a foreign language. Public speaking: what’s the secret? Contrary to popular belief, the secret to confident public speaking is not about getting rid of your nerves. The key is to reframe your anxiety as excitement! Public speaking is a teachable skill. It requires training and an understanding of key strategies to overcome shyness, nervousness and the limiting belief that one is not cut out to speak in public. The specialised consultant at Public Speaking, Marjory North, mentioned something on the Harvard Continuing Education blog that I personally agree with and would like to share with you: Practice Does Not Make Perfect! “Good communication is never perfect, and nobody expects you to be perfect. However, putting in the requisite time to prepare will help you deliver a better speech. You may not be able to shake your nerves entirely, but you can learn to minimise them.” MARJORY NORTH, PUBLIC SPEAKING. Mindset. In a workshop, I always get started by asking students to share what they fear the most about public speaking and why they need to have this skill. Most answers are related to limiting beliefs. For example, some say that only a few people are talented enough for that. Others express how much they think that being able to speak in public, particularly in English, will help them to stand out in their professional life. What are some common feelings people experience before speaking in public? People usually get nervous, feel insecure, their mind goes blank, and their heart starts racing, among other things. What can help us outgrow this fear and insecurity? * Reframe your anxiety into excitement, * Take a deep breath (x3), pause and breathe, * Remind yourself why you care, * Drink water, * Avoid looking directly at people’s faces, * Take your audience on a journey. Know That It’s Not About You: “I wish I had known that it was not about me,” says Sarah Gershman of Green Room Speakers. “When I first started speaking, I wasn’t as effective as I could’ve been because I viewed it as a performance. I was more focused on how the audience felt about me than on how I could help them. Once I turned my attention on helping the audience, I became less nervous, and I became a better speaker.” Frame your presentation. To open your presentation... “Let me begin with...” “I’d like to start by telling you about...” “Today I am going to present...” Key message of your speech. Close the presentation... “Thank you all for your time and attention.” “With that, I want to wrap up my presentation. Thank you for listening.” “I’d like to end my presentation here. Thanks for coming and if you have any more questions, I’d be happy to answer them afterwards.” Help your students overcome the barrier. Teacher colleagues, I invite you to find opportunities to assist your students to overcome this barrier. Here are some ways to do this. In-person public speaking: * Make your classroom a welcoming environment where your students can feel safe., * Encourage them to share their fears and also, why getting better at speaking in front of audiences can be an asset., * Insert ‘pocket speech’ dynamics during a few classes., * While working in small groups, suggest a seating arrangement where there is a spot for the speaker, and let the group know they need to take turns., * Small groups standing up, or having a dedicated speaking spot, can be a good variation. Digital public speaking: * Digital and virtual environments pose a similar challenge – think about posture, audience, timing, how to share the screen and whether audio is needed., * Empathise and connect with the audience., * Break out rooms in online classes should be considered training spaces as well., * Some great tips to share with online presenters are: 1.) how to make use of the chat feature and the importance of having links and information ready to share in another digital doc, so that they can easily copy/paste, 2.) to look at the camera, 3.) to click on the spotlight feature, 4.) and that having a small ring light does make a difference. Speaking in public is an exercise in self-esteem and believing in your own capacity. Let’s give our learners the opportunity to improve at this key skill.
